Jay Naidoo Bio

Jay Naidoo is an Elder, grandfather and social activist. He has played many roles from a student, community, political and union activist. He has been the founding General Secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions and a Minister of Reconstruction and Development and then Communications in President Mandela’s Cabinet.

 

He sat on the Board of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation which focuses on building good governance and ethical leadership in Africa. And is an Ambassador of Africans Rising Movement.

 

Today he is a volunteer working towards an authentic intergenerational conversation in Africa and globally. He supports youth causes that co-creates a new activism based on movement building that puts regenerative systems, ecology and indigenous wisdom at its centre.

 

He seeks to promote a radical collaboration between all sections of our society that rebuilds and recalibrates our relationship with each other and all we share our Mother Earth with.

 

He has been honoured multiple times. Recipient of the Chevalier d’honneur from the French Government and honorary doctorates in Political Science from UQAM University in Montreal and a honorary doctorate from Durban University of Technology in the Built Environment.

Experience

Jay Naidoo has spent his career leading social, political and economic transformation in South Africa, Africa and globally. He has held various positions including General-Secretary of COSATU, Minister of Reconstruction and Development in Nelson Mandela's cabinet, Chair of the Development Bank of Southern Africa, and founding Chair of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and a Fellow of the African Leadership Institute

Publications

Jay Naidoo has written extensively on issues of social justice, human rights, and sustainable development. His books include 'Fighting for Justice'', and ''Change: Organising Tomorrow, Today'.
