Amílcar Lopes da Costa Cabral

Poet. Intellectual. Revolutionary.

Leader of our fierce anti-colonial struggles.

Your inspiring pan-Africanism

Lit the spark of freedom

In our hearts as millions of activists

Worldwide.

Your assassination

January 20, 1973

Fuelled our mass struggles

Against the shackles of our colonial oppressors.

Your words remind us that the struggle never ceases

‘The nature of the state created after independence … is the secret of the failure of African independence.’

Aah Spirit of Cabral

Renew our consciousness.

‘Struggle is daily action against ourselves’

‘Culture the product of history as the flower is the product of a plant.’

May we transcend the arrogance

of liberation heroism

Aluta Continua.

‘Hide nothing from the masses of our people.

Tell no lies.

Expose lies whenever they are told. Mask no difficulties, mistakes, failures.

Claim no easy victories... ‘

Aah Cabral. Lumamba. Neto. Nasser.

Mandela. Machel. Nyerere

Our liberation ancestors.

Guide the leadership of Africa

To the lodestar of true freedom

“to become intimately familiar with the people and land”

Far from the corrupting influence

of a capitalist trap lurking in the shadows of continuing exclusion.

Knowest that imperialism is a shapeshifter.

As we stand at the crossroads

We re-member the road we travelled we build a new road as we walk it

Fashioned from below

Far from the predation of elites

who perpetuate our enslavement.

‘The children are our flowers

The main reason for our fight for liberation.’

We look to our people to lead us.

We claim no easy victories.
